HIKE as close as safely possible, when it's possible! This strenuous hike across barren lava & islands of native plants is adapted to eruption conditions on your tour, for the best chance to see red, active lava close-up on land! Includes a PRIVATE GUIDE with safety gear & presentations on the ever-changing history of the eruption! Current status: Lava flows were LAST ACCESSIBLE in December 2011 via a 7mi/12km (4-6 hr + viewing time) round-trip hike over uneven terrain. Conditions can change within days, so let us know if you'd like any tour to have LAVA PRIORITY if it becomes accessible within your limits!

Sample itinerary

Day 1:

The Lava Proximity Hike
HIKE as close as safely possible, when it's possible! At present, this hike requires 2.5 mi / 4 km / 1.5 hrs walk at sea-level over uneven terrain crossing recent & historic lava flows and islands of native vegetation, allowing ~1 hr at the site of activity on a 6-hr tour leaving from Hilo or Volcano. This itinerary can be combined with our other tour offerings and customized to your preferences, please enquire!

Arrival info:

The tour starts and ends on Big Island, ideally in Hilo or Volcano. Pick-up and transfers to and from Kona can be arranged, but the guided transfer time counts towards the time of the tour.
